Teaching biology in both the classroom and the laboratory is an exciting part of being a scientist for me. I love bringing students into the lab and helping them learn the technical and intellectual skills necessary to become a scientist. I also love getting in front of a classroom and guiding students as they explore new ideas. The essence of biology is investigation of our living world. Therefore I believe the best way to teach biology and prepare life-long learners is by stimulating students’ curiosity and creating space for discovery. You can read more about my teaching philosophy as well as the courses I have taught and anticipate teaching. In addition to courses for biology majors, I am particularly drawn to teaching courses that enable non-scientists to understand the biology behind issues that are in the public consciousness. Several of my courses fit into this model and it is also the reason I will start a blog for non-scientists.
